Financially does Misfits Market save you money over shopping at the grocery store? Is Misfits Market a good deal, how much money do you save, and dollar-for-dollar, is it worth the price?
I headed to the grocery store where I itemized the produce in my weekly delivery from Misfits Market and performed a cost analysis to find out if I was really saving money and how much. Here’s what I found:
Misfits Market is less expensive than buying organic produce at the grocery store by a whopping 50%. The large-sized Misfits box costs $35 + $5 shipping and contains $80 of organic produce. It was $40 cheaper than the organic produce, and $20 cheaper than the non-organic produce at the grocery store.
Organic produce is USUALLY much more expensive than non-organic produce. Studies from Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Organization show averages for organic versus non-organic produce hovers around 50% to 100% more expensive for many items. But not if it’s from Misfits Market!

Buying from Misfits Market gives you high-quality organic produce for LESS than typical non-organic items sell for at the grocery store.
When I headed out to compare, I anticipated the savings to be only slight, maybe a few dollars at most, so you can imagine how surprised I was.
Happily, I started doing the math for future weeks and months. The savings add up quickly for our family of five.
Interestingly, the biggest surprise though was that the savings weren’t the biggest surprise – the biggest surprise was that the quality was better than the grocery store and that I was somehow saving money over what I usually buy (which is not all organic) while now buying 100% organic from Misfits.
And they only buy and sell organic produce. Yes. It’s 100% organic.
You can see exactly what produce they have each week on their website and the collection is a great mix of everyday staples and also exotic, high-end varieties that are somehow priced cheaper than the boring varieties found at the supermarket every day. It’s very exciting to a mom like me who loves beautiful fresh fruits and veggies!
While their mission is noble – saving organic produce that isn’t aesthetically perfect and would normally be wasted, the benefit for me is a huge upgrade in what I feed my family and on my grocery bill.
The produce we see at the grocery store is all the same size and color.
When Misfit Market buys this produce directly from farmers that doesn’t fit in this category of “perfection,” they get an amazing deal on very high-quality produce and are able to sell it to you and me for a great price.
Misfits was a clear money saver, not to mention a time-saver and sanity saver.
I’m sure I also save a lot of money just by not going to the store and impulse buying a bunch of processed food I don’t need or want until I see it at the store (and that of course is not factored into me cost-analysis).
The best part was that when I bought the same items at my grocery store to compare and took them home, it was very obvious that the produce I was getting in my delivery box was first-rate and often larger and better quality than the picked-over selection from the store (or smaller, like my Brussel sprouts which were the best I’ve ever had and the first time I had delicious brussel sprouts….sometimes smaller = better!).
The store may have “industry standard” produce but that leaves me to compete with hundreds of other shoppers for those perfect grapes or tomatoes, often leaving the worst of the “perfect sized” when you are shopping for dinner. With Misfits, I feel like I’m getting the best produce. It’s very surprising but you’ll find the same thing and you’ll be delighted.
Misfits also has the option to add on pantry items. I looked at some of them in the store, and I was shocked that when I added on other items in my cart with Misfits that these were all at least 25% to 50% cheaper than my local grocery store.
It seems a little too good to be true. But it isn’t.
As food prices have soared in the last decade we have all had to shop more carefully to keep our food budget in order so this feels like a game-changer.
I have 3 kids, all boys and they eat an amazing amount of food. We live on the East Coast where groceries are expensive. We grow a large garden in the summer, but in the winter we rely on the grocery store for loads of produce and groceries.
I usually buy a mix of organic and non-organic food items from the grocery store, depending on the price and the item. Some items I’m more likely to buy organic. Of course, as a gardener and nature-minded person I always prefer organic, so now having 100% of the food from my Misfits Market box be organic is a huge bonus.
It feels like a luxury, and somehow it’s saving me money.
I’ll be honest, the best part is opening the box with my kids.
They act like it is Christmas morning.
It’s hilarious.
They take all the produce out of the box and line it up on the table and then my youngest pretends it’s his store and sells the produce to us with pretend money.
They are always excited about the surprise items that are new to us. You can select exactly what items you want online before your order, or you can just be surprised by what they send. I’ve done both. If you don’t have time to get online and hand-pick the order they will just send you a lovely box and I feel like it’s even better.
We have tried veggies I never would have bought on my own and my kids are 100% more likely to eat them because they arrived on our doorstep like a gift. I don’t quite understand it but I’ll take it if it means my little boys are eating more veggies and fruit.
I’m more than happy with the experience. It’s been this little joyful thing to look forward to each week during these hard times.
Wishing you health and joy from our family to yours and encouraging you to take One Step Closer to Nature everyday!

I have no affiliation with Misfits Market and my review is based on my own research and cost-analysis with our own local New England grocery store. I’m sure the exact percentages and numbers will vary with seasons, on what you select each week, and depending on what part of the country you live in, but I believe that buying from Misfits is a win-win for quality, savings, health, and doing good.
